He is 17 years old and his occupation is listed as Joiner. Also staying with Alex Rogers at the time is his wife Christiana and another grandson James Rogers aged 10 and listed as a Scholar.&nbsp; At this stage we do not know who&#8217;s child he was.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas married Elizabeth Lumsden, a school teacher, aged 23 on the 12 July 1867 at her parents home 8 Pennycook&#8217;s lane, Dundee, Scotland.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/TRBrown-to-ELumsden.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-79 aligncenter\" title=\"Marriage of Thomas Roger Brown to Elizabeth Lumsden\" src=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/TRBrown-to-ELumsden-300x107.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/TRBrown-to-ELumsden-300x107.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/TRBrown-to-ELumsden.jpg 903w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thomas and Elizabeth had one son <a href=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/?page_id=62\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alexander Rogers Brown<\/a> born on the 19 June 1868 in Dundee, Scotland. (IGI Batch: C112823, 6035516)<\/p>\n<p>Elizabeth died on the 17 July 1868 at the age of 25. (Statutory Deaths 282\/010239)<\/p>\n<p>Thomas married again on the 11 January 1870 to Catherine Rogers<\/p>\n<p>Thomas and Catherine had eight children, <a href=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/?page_id=38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James (1870 &#8211; 1943)<\/a>, Thomas (1872 &#8211; ), <a href=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/?page_id=51\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catherine (1873 &#8211; 1953)<\/a>, Andrew (), Joseph (), William (), Jessie (), and <a href=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/?page_id=61\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ebenezer (1877 &#8211; 1952)<\/a>. The first three were born in Scotland, while the last five were born in South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The 1871 Census for Scotland shows Thomas, Catherine, Alexander and James living at 312 Perth Road, Dundee. Thomas is 27 years old, Catherine is 28 years old, Alexander is 2 years old, and James is 5 months. Thomas&#8217; occupation is listed as Joiner<\/p>\n<p>Thomas, Catherine, and the four children emigrated to South Africa in 1874.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas came to South Africa to work at the Lovedale Mission in the Eastern Cape. It is known that he then worked at Blythswood Mission further north of Lovedale near Butterworth also in the Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n<p>The 1878 Voter&#8217;s List for the Western and Eastern cape records Thomas as living at Lovedale. His voters number was 18. The Electoral District being Victoria East and the Cornetcy Alice.<\/p>\n<p>At some point Thomas went farming and we read in his sons obituary that he died on the farm and the family then moved to King WilliamsTown which is inland of East London also in the Eastern Cape. However Thomas&#8217; Death Notice shows that his usual place of residence was West Bank, King Williamstown. There appear to be differences in the date of births, but this could be a result of working &#8216;backwards&#8217; from the date of death.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/BROWN-Thomas-Rogers-1843-1901-_-Catherine-1842-1900.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-91 aligncenter\" title=\"BROWN Thomas Rogers 1843 - 1901 _ Catherine 1842 - 1900\" src=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/BROWN-Thomas-Rogers-1843-1901-_-Catherine-1842-1900-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/BROWN-Thomas-Rogers-1843-1901-_-Catherine-1842-1900-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rogers-brown.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/BROWN-Thomas-Rogers-1843-1901-_-Catherine-1842-1900.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Information on the Parish Church of Errol<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The parish church of <strong>Errol<\/strong>, which belonged anciently to the Abbey of Cupar, was dedicated by Bishop de Bernham in 1243 and in 1628 the old parishes of <strong>Errol<\/strong> and of Inchmartin were united together. In 1938, following the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929, the Parish church of <strong>Errol<\/strong> (also known as <strong>Errol<\/strong> North) was joined with the former United Free Church congregation of <strong>Errol<\/strong> South. After the union the former parish church continued in use as the place of worship and the former South church was converted for use as the church hall. <strong>Errol<\/strong> later established a link in 1980 with Kilspindie and Rait with Kinfauns.
