<\/a><\/p>\nThe 1861 census has Thomas staying with his Grandfather Alex Rogers at Glendoick Farm House in the Parish of Errol. He is 17 years old and his occupation is listed as Joiner. Also staying with Alex Rogers at the time is his wife Christiana and another grandson James Rogers aged 10 and listed as a Scholar. At this stage we do not know who’s child he was.<\/p>\n
Thomas married Elizabeth Lumsden, a school teacher, aged 23 on the 12 July 1867 at her parents home 8 Pennycook’s lane, Dundee, Scotland.<\/p>\n
Thomas and Elizabeth had one son Alexander Rogers Brown<\/a> born on the 19 June 1868 in Dundee, Scotland. (IGI Batch: C112823, 6035516)<\/p>\n Elizabeth died on the 17 July 1868 at the age of 25. (Statutory Deaths 282\/010239)<\/p>\n Thomas married again on the 11 January 1870 to Catherine Rogers<\/p>\n Thomas and Catherine had eight children, James (1870 – 1943)<\/a>, Thomas (1872 – ), Catherine (1873 – 1953)<\/a>, Andrew (), Joseph (), William (), Jessie (), and Ebenezer (1877 – 1952)<\/a>. The first three were born in Scotland, while the last five were born in South Africa.<\/p>\n The 1871 Census for Scotland shows Thomas, Catherine, Alexander and James living at 312 Perth Road, Dundee. Thomas is 27 years old, Catherine is 28 years old, Alexander is 2 years old, and James is 5 months. Thomas’ occupation is listed as Joiner<\/p>\n Thomas, Catherine, and the four children emigrated to South Africa in 1874.<\/p>\n Thomas came to South Africa to work at the Lovedale Mission in the Eastern Cape. It is known that he then worked at Blythswood Mission further north of Lovedale near Butterworth also in the Eastern Cape.<\/p>\n The 1878 Voter’s List for the Western and Eastern cape records Thomas as living at Lovedale. His voters number was 18. The Electoral District being Victoria East and the Cornetcy Alice.<\/p>\n At some point Thomas went farming and we read in his sons obituary that he died on the farm and the family then moved to King WilliamsTown which is inland of East London also in the Eastern Cape. However Thomas’ Death Notice shows that his usual place of residence was West Bank, King Williamstown. He died on the 8th November 1901.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
